LOCATION: SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA
CLIENT: HNTB/DEPT. OF THE AIR FORCE
ESTIMATED COSTS: $54,000,000
The project consisted of a pavement evaluation of the apron at Barksdale AFB and proposed alternative rehabilitation designs to upgrade
the apron pavement.
In conducting the pavement evaluation, the field investigation included records review, nondestructive deflection testing, visual condition surveys, and material sampling and testing. A pavement evaluation study included analyses of subgrade strength, structural capacity, and surface condition. The surface condition analysis was based on PCI. Since most of the pavement was not of adequate thickness for the projected future aircraft loads, structural upgrading was recommended. Several pavement rehabilitation alternatives were studied for the apron, including: complete PCC removal and replacement, PCC overlay, and removal and replacement of the existing PCC overlay. The alternatives were analyzed according to controlling grade and drainage requirements, structural design, and unit costs
