Mr. Smith has 25 years of airport engineering experience, including 48 small to medium sized airports, 21 military bases, and 26 large commercial airports. He has concentrated primarily on airport engineering since 1975 and has been recognized nationally as one of the leaders in innovative engineering for concrete and asphalt pavement improvements projects for airports across the U.S. and abroad.  He routinely was invited to present the results of his specialized pavement evaluation, design and research work at various FAA, PCA, and ASCE conferences over a 15 year period during the 80's and early 90's. 


Since establishing Smith-Western Engineering in 1995 he has provided design engineering, construction phase engineering and project management for 33 projects at 28 different airports. Mr. Smith has extensive experience regarding airfield paving projects for both asphalt and concrete pavements, and provides excellent knowledge of state-of-the art materials, life cycle cost analysis, and alternative approaches to design and construction.  He is also experienced in airport lighting, navaids, drainage, fencing, and airport layout plans.
